L - Carnitine

What L-Carnitine Is

L-Carnitine is a vitamin like nutrient and occurs naturally in the body.

The function of L-Carnitine in animal production was discovered in the late 1980's,then research studies followed at major universities, feed companies and farms. These research and studies demonstrated and proved L-Carnitine innovative and effective in improving fat metabolism. Presently, its effectiveness in increasing the efficiency has received significant attention and L-Carnitine begin to be added in diets for livestock, racing and pet animals.

With L-Carnitine technology, we can offer the animal exactly what is needed --- maximum performance, fitness, and profitability.

What its Function

L-Carnitine is involved in a couple of processes in cellular fat metabolism. It serves there as receptor substance for activated fatty acids/organic acids.

In particular L-Carnitine is essential for the following processes:

  • transport of activated fatty acids (catalytic function)
  • buffering of the CoA-pool (metabolic function)
  • protection and modulation of membranes and neurons
  • excretion of surplus of metabolised fatty acids (detoxification)

L-carnitine is essential for the fat metabolism. Therefore, it is named "the energy vitamin".
But endogenous synthesis is often not sufficient to cover the animal's requirements. Scientific research gives evidence that a dietary supplement may be beneficial in the following situations:

Young/elderly individuals (reduced biosynthesis)
Increased performance requirement (growth, etc.)
Stress (cold, heat, pregnancy, lactation, change in feed, transport)
Conditions of sustained exertion (racing and sport animals)
Weight management programs
Diets low in L-Carnitine
High-fat diet
Cardiac, liver, kidney and bowel disorders
Fertility problems (e.g. sperm motility, return to oestrus)
Surgical interventions and convalescence
Treatment with certain drugs

Chemically Carnitine comes in two stereo-iso-meric forms: L-Carnitine and D-Carnitine, but only the L-form is biologically active and occurs in nature. In general only the L-form has been recommended as feed additive.

Recommended Level and Time

Animal Species Stage Daily supplementation Feeding Period
Poultry Breeding Hens 50 ppm the whole laying phase
Swine Breeding Boars 400-500ppm
Swine Gestating Sows 100ppm during breeding, gestation and lactation
Swine Lactating Sows 100ppm the whole gestation and lactation period.
Swine Baby Pigs 100 the whole weaning phase
Swine Nursery Pigs 40-100ppm depending on body weight(b/w)
Swine Growing-Finishing Pigs 100 ppm the growing-finishing period till to market.
Cattle Breeding Bulls 20 gm the whole breeding season
Cattle Dairy Cows 5 - 10 g Continue till lactation
Cattle Baby Calves 200 mg in milkreplacer
Cattle Beef Cattle (growing/fattening) 250-400 mg per 100 kg b/w
Aquaculture Reproduction in Fish 500 mg L-Carnitine per kg fish feed

Supply Form and Packing

L-carnitine can be supplied in several forms and derivatives. For animal use,we recommend:

(1)L-carnitine:USP24, content 97.0% min.25kgs in cardboard drum.
(2) L-carnitine Feed grade, mixed with silicon oxide, for direct addition in animal feed. content 48.5% to 52.0%. 25kgs packed in drum.
